"It is an honor to be asked to write this testimonial for Scarlett, though I do not know if words can properly express the impact that she has had upon my life and the changes that she has helped me to make.

When I met Scarlett I was very sick. I had been struggling with anorexia and bulimia for thirteen years, and many of the people who were treating me felt I was incurable. I felt that I was incurable. Due to this I had no hope for a better life. At the time I met Scarlett, I had been treated by at least a dozen other dietitians. I couldn't imagine that Scarlett would be any different, but I was wrong.

The day that of my first appointment with Scarlett, she told me that she would never give up on me. I could not let myself believe this because everyone that came before her had given up. She refused to label me, and because of this, she treated me as a person and not as a case study. She has an innate ability to connect with her patients as individuals, as opposed to looking at the illness as the person. I soon came to realize that Scarlett was willing to go above and beyond the normal standard of care to help her patients. With this realization, I felt she earned my trust. 

Since I trusted Scarlett I was able to let myself work through my phobias of food with her, and for the first time I was able to make significant progress in treatment. With Scarlett I did not feel alienated or ashamed of my problems because I felt that she was not judging me. There were many times in the course of our treatment that I wanted to give up and run to my eating disorder for comfort or solace, but this was simply not allowed. It was understood that I would lapse at times, as this is a part of recovery, but since I had somebody to be accountable to, I was not able to have a full blown relapse.

I can remember so clearly sitting in Scarlett’s office trying to eat my bagels and sobbing and she would just sit there with me and push me to finish. Something that Scarlett told me so many times during those years was "Mon, you don't have to know that this is going to be okay, when you don't know that, I will know it for you". She had to know it for me for a very long time but eventually I learned to know it for myself.

I was an extreme chronic case whose chances of survival were not good because my body could no longer sustain the abuse of the illness. I could be dead now without Scarlett's help and compassion . There is no doubt in my mind that Scarlett saved my life. She stuck by me and believed in me when everybody else had given up. Today I am recovered, and for the first time ever, I'm living life. This is a life I had to fight for, but with Scarlett’s help, I won."
